Slowing Down The Start
Do you tend to talk too fast at the start of your speech or presentation?
I always have butterflies in my stomach before any speaking engagement, but I’m OK with that because I’ve nailed my introduction.
That’s the bit where you have to grab their attention. If you’re quick out the gate, with a few um’s and er’s, and perhaps a nervous giggle thrown in, then you risk being judged negatively.
Here’s what I’ve done, and get clients to do. It’s helped me a lot and for sure, it helps the people I work with. I hear it when they present in front of me.
Chunking – writing out my intro, marking it up into ‘thought groups’, learning it by heart.
Check out the picture. That magic word that comes before chunking on the powerpoint slide – PAUSING.
If you write out your intro and mark up the chunks, that will make you pause at those marks, and voila! You will naturally slow down.
Try it out next time you have a speaking engagement.
Let me know if it works for you.
