Reading vs Speaking Voice
One way to quickly lose your audience when giving a presentation is to read your slides, point by point, paragraph by paragraph.
There is a big difference between reading out chunks of information and using one’s voice to engage and hold the attention of your listeners.
Here’s a quick tip to check that your delivery is dynamic and engaging:
- Select 2 PP slides only – your introduction slide and your agenda/outline slide.
- Record yourself simply reading the information.
- Play it back and critique your delivery for pacing, pausing, intonation and stress.
- Now, record yourself again, but do not look at the slides. (If you have prepared enough you will know your agenda items well).
- As you record, imagine you are speaking to people in front of you.
- Compare this spoken voice to your reading voice. Does it sound more dynamic and engaging?
In short, avoid simply reading information on slides, it’s the quickest way to lose an audience.
