Public Speaking Skills
I always like hearing other’s opinions on my area of expertise, public speaking, and it’s good to see the Fast Co Executive Board, reinforce a lot of what I believe in. Check out the article here.
Out of the 15 key points covered, the ones that hit my mark are:
1. Practice – I’m still astounded when clients tell me they wing it, even for a high-stakes pitch or presentation. Heavens, why?
3. Find a coach – hell yeah. Doesn’t have to be me, but you need someone to give you honest, objective feedback.
5. Treat it like a one-on-one conversation – totally. When the cortisol is raging, the sea of faces, the spotlight makes your top lip sweat, just chat. Authenticity over dramatic delivery, any day.
12. Remember that you’re the expert – that’s why you’ve most probably been called on to present. Keep the imposter syndrome locked up in it’s box.
13. Record yourself – totes. That’s what I’ve been doing with clients for over 20 years. Takes guts cos a lot of people hate the sound of their own voice, but that’s when the magic happens.
14. Learn breathing techniques – double win here. Deepens the voice, giving it power and also calms the nerves and adrenaline rush.
I’ve created a FREE 6-part Voice And Presence Video Toolkit, with some handy warm ups if you need to speak at an event in-person or online. And there’s a workbook too of all the exercises.
