Projecting NOT Shouting
With some clients I work with 1-1, we focus on raising the volume of the voice. But speaking louder does not mean shouting.
According to the American Lung Association we only use 30-35% of our full lung capacity, so this is where breathing comes in. To have a powerful voice, we need to project the voice from a solid foundation of the breath.
Typically I will run through a series of exercises to teach the difference between projection and shouting…
✅ Controlling the inhale
✅ Extending the exhale
✅ Working on the pitch
Do all these 3 things, and your voice will project.
In the picture, I have a microphone on the lectern. I will switch that off when I deliver my talk, as I will be projecting my voice with enough volume.
Behind me is the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. Later, I intend to go to the top and practice my voice projection!
