My Favourite Warm Up
Here’s how to warm up your diaphragm for public speaking – it’s one of my favourites.
The diaphragmatic breath gives your voice volume and power. And just as we limber up the body before exercise, warming up the diaphragm will energise your breath, allowing you to speak with a more powerful voice.
Here’s what to do:
1️⃣ Using your first two fingers on each hand, locate the diaphragmatic muscle. (I’m doing it in the photo). You’ll find it just underneath your rib cage.
2️⃣ Keeping your fingers there, breathe in and fill your stomach area with air. Imagine it’s filling up like a balloon.
3️⃣ Now, exhale making a short, sharp “HA” sound and ‘snap’ your stomach in at the same time.
4️⃣ Do it again 5 times, snapping the stomach in every time you say “HA”. You should feel the muscle under your fingers contracting.
5️⃣ Focus on the volume of your voice coming from your stomach area, not your throat. The HA’s should be strong, powerful and resonant.
Do this exercise just before any pitch or presentation and it will set you up with a solid vocal foundation, giving your voice more depth when you speak.
