Intonation Vs Monotone

“But, I sound really dramatic” he says.

“No, you don’t” I say, “you sound engaging”.

It’s always interesting when I work with people who deliver in a monotone. They think they are engaging but I’m running a whole load of judgements on them: Bored, disinterested, tired, preoccupied…

Why is it good for you to use dynamic intonation?

1. It gives energy to your voice, and makes you sound interesting.

2. It engages your listeners and keeps their attention.

Behind the monotone is a sense of self-consciousness, I think. It’s about not wanting to speak up and be heard.

But always consider it from the listener’s point of view. Don’t be dramatic, just be engaging. That’s all I ask.
