How To Speak Clearly

If you’re a mumbler and speak fast, and you’re meeting online AND you have your camera off -good luck with holding the attention of the virtual room.

We’ve all heard that type of presenter, right?

To make an impact, you need to have good articulation, especially if you are presenting complex data.

Here’s what to do:

Picture 1. Your tongue is both good and bad for articulation. The blade of the tongue, (see mine) is good for clarity but the root of the tongue (thankfully no picture provided), is not.

Pictures 2 & 3. Move your tongue round your mouth, first clockwise, then anticlockwise. Do it 8 times, then 4, then 2. It’ll most likely feel strained. That’s because you’re releasing the root of the tongue, and that’s the bit that helps with clarity. But, stick with it.

Picture 4. Turn on your camera, take a deep breath and go for it. I bet you your articulation will have improved.

Fun fact: I do this exercise as a warm up in my communication skills workshops and webinars and 99% of the people say it works. And that 1% usually bail on the first round of 8 rotations.

Try it out next time you need to present virtually.
