How To Self Assess Your Speech

If you really want to get a sense of how you’re progressing when practicing for any big speaking event, here’s how you can get right down to business – review your performance 3 times.

If you separate out your voice and presence, then combine the two you can really hone down on what is working and what needs improvement.

Here’s what I suggest:

1. Set up your phone camera so it shoots your whole body – this distance will also encourage you to raise your voice.

2. Video yourself in sections – intro, part 1, 2 etc. closing.

3. Play back with SOUND OFF – Focus only on your presence. How do you look? Assess posture, gesture, eyes, smiles. Are you connecting?

4. Play back with EYES CLOSED – Only listen to your voice. Assess your levels of vocal variety. Are you engaging?

5. Play back again – now look and listen to the combination of voice and presence. Do they support each other?

Breaking a speech down into sections, then breaking that down into even smaller parts, means you can get a real sense of your progress.

It might sound like a bit of effort, but if you want to nail a speech, this 3-part self assessment is the way to go.
