First Impressions Count
Have you gone to shake someone’s hand and they offer you, at most, a few fingertips, and sort of hang off your fingers?
They don’t shake your hand with intention.
This is the ‘wet fish’.
Here’s me cringing while I film it as an example of how NOT to greet someone!
And when I ask during workshops if this is familiar, the majority of attendees say “ewww, yes”.
It is said that people judge you in the first seven seconds of meeting, so your handshake really counts towards making a great first impression.
A confident handshake with a smile is a great way to break the ice when networking, or meeting clients for the first time.
Here are four points to remember when offering your hand:
✅ Offer your hand confidently, extending your arm fully with the intent to engage.
✅ Connect your hands all the way to the base of your thumb, and gently close your fingers around the other person’s palm.
✅ Notice the pressure of the other person’s grip and match it, unless their grip is very weak.
✅ Look into their eyes and smile.
Have you experienced the ‘wet fish’ and how did it make you feel?
