Finding The Perfect Pace

One common misconception about the communication aspects of leadership, authority and gravitas, is that to convey these traits you need to speak at a slow pace all the time.

This is wrong! And the fastest way to have people zone out or reach for their phones to check messages.

To be a compelling speaker, whether it’s in meetings, speaking at a conference or giving a town hall you need to vary your pace.

As a general rule, try to do this:

✅ Speeding Up:

▶️ Good for less important information
▶️ To add excitement and impact

✅ Slowing Down:

▶️ When delivering important or serious information
▶️ To deliver complex ideas

Start from a slower than normal conversational pace and then vary your pace. That way you will always engage people (so long as your material is interesting, of course).

One thing I love about running workshops is having people try out different deliveries for immediate group feedback.

Thank you Stephenson Harwood LLP for inviting me to run my CPD accredited (Law Society of Singapore), communication skills workshop at your Firm.
