Calming Down Your Gestures
Read the room – don’t let your hands do the talking.
There’s a link between speaking fast and using your hands. They both feed off each other.
This is fine if the situation calls for animated discussion in a meeting, or adding visual context to a story on a stage. Hand gestures are great and always add extra impact when communicating.
But if, like me, you like to gesture a lot, and the dynamic in the room is more serious or calm, then do this – interlock your fingers to keep your hands still.
And notice what happens to your pacing when you consciously do this.
For me, it works all the time. I slow down, and my attention is totally focused on the speaker.
