The Teacher’s Voice

Do you have memories of a teacher who made a lasting impression on you, either positive or negative?

I loved English lessons, especially when my teacher read stories. Conversely,  I dreaded maths because the teacher was a crashing bore with his monotone droning voice.

Voice really does matter, especially as educators. It creates a lasting impression. It’s this amazing tool that we take for granted. So how can we use it effectively to command attention, engage the classroom and facilitate learning?

I was so happy to run a workshop ‘The Teacher’s Voice: Maximizing Impact’ for all the teaching staff at Carmel school,  as part of their Professional Development Program. Despite the number (60+) and range of teachers (from early years to IB Diploma) the focus was the same – to develop vocal strategies for maximum impact.

My highly interactive 1-hr session, packed with tangible takeaways, focused on:

✅ Voice care – to alleviate the challenges of mandatory mask wearing and the effect on the voice.

✅ Voice projection – to maximize teacher’s vocal strength, through breath and volume control.

✅ Volume – implementing strategies to control, manage and add impact to the teaching method no matter what level.

✅ Intonation – Focusing on dynamic intonation patterns to engage students.

✅ Pacing – Raising awareness of the impact of speed modulation both for the learner and the teacher.

So great to be back face to face, and wishing all teachers out there the best of luck in the new academic year.
