The Link Between Gesture And Voice

It’s a given that using gesture in interactions increases the impact of the message. There’s a lot of research out there to back this up.

But here’s something you can experiment with – what happens to the voice when you gesture?

I worked with someone recently who just did not like to gesture.

I videoed them introducing themselves and their talk in 2 ways – Firstly, hands behind the back (their preferred stance) and then using gesture.

Of course, the video using gestures was more engaging, but that wasn’t the point of the task.

It’s what happened to the voice.

Try it for yourself and let me know the two things you notice.

Needless to say, the person is now using gestures!
