Looking Good Online

Great to be back with Clyde & Co to run two consecutive webinars with their China and APAC-wide offices. This time, working on finessing online communication. I created Make An Impact Online: Voice and Presence based on data from a communication skills survey I conducted with APAC L&D heads.

One of the issues we’re hearing is “Where do I look? The faces on the screen or the camera?” It is a bit counter-intuitive as naturally you want to look at the faces but this then means you’re not actually looking directly at them.  Research from Laurence Conty, et. al., (‘Watching Eyes effects: When others meet the self’, Consciousness and Cognition, 2016) notes that eye contact….’Helps your audience understand, remember, and make decisions about what you’re saying’

Opening meetings, pitching an idea to the group, asking for someone specific to speak… then look directly into the camera. We use a post-it note placed above the camera with arrows pointing to the lens.
